Metis Crossing hosts powerful Axis Theatre Production exploring Métis history

By Brandie Majeau
In a moving tribute to Métis heritage and resilience, Metis Crossing recently
welcomed Axis Theatre for a special presentation of “Where Have All the Buffalo
Gone?” The performance, held shortly after National Truth and Reconciliation Day,
offered audiences an immersive journey through centuries of Métis history, blending art,
education, and cultural celebration.
The evening began with a reflective atmosphere, acknowledging the solemnity of
Truth and Reconciliation before inviting attendees to a unique dinner and theatre
experience. The main event, “Where Have All the Buffalo Gone?” traced the footsteps
of two Métis souls through four poignant love stories, each set in a distinct era of Métis
history. From the emergence of the Métis nations across the plains, through the era of
the fur trade and the devastating disappearance of the buffalo, to the political
awakening embodied by the Métis Association of Alberta, the play painted a broad yet
intimate portrait of Métis life.
Inspired by the lived experiences of the Callihoo family, the show transformed
history into a vivid spectacle, featuring lively fiddle tunes, energetic jig dancing, and an
impressively lifelike buffalo puppet. Opening with a celestial creation tale, the narrative
guided viewers from ancient times to the modern era, illuminating the lasting bonds of
love, sorrow, and connection that shape the Métis connection to both land and buffalo.
Axis Theatre, known for its innovative blend of physical theatre, puppetry, live
music, and improvisation, strives to engage and inspire young audiences. By combining
traditional storytelling with fresh, interactive elements, the group delivers performances
that are both educational and memorable.
“Where Have All the Buffalo Gone?” resonated deeply with attendees, offering
not only entertainment but also a powerful reminder of the struggles and triumphs of
Treaty 6’s Métis communities. Through its artistry and authenticity, the production
centered on a deeper insight of Métis culture and the ongoing journey toward
reconciliation and understanding.
