A celebration of culture and community took place at Nekinan Lodge on
September 11, as more than 45 residents of Smoky Lake gathered for an evening of
music, dance, and song. The event, organized by FCSS Smoky Lake and Nekinan
Lodge, featured a karaoke night that brought together people from different generations
and backgrounds.
The atmosphere was filled with excitement as each participant gathered, offering
a moment to pause and appreciate the diversity and energy woven throughout the
building. Throughout the evening, participants took to the stage to sing a variety of
songs, sharing their musical talents and stories of their origins and journeys to Smoky
Lake. The exchange of personal stories created a sense of belonging and mutual
understanding, as attendees chatted and discovered the diverse collage of cultures
layered over time that now call the area home.
Deanna Sonnleitner, hired to plan and lead the karaoke night, played an amazing
role in building a fun and welcoming space, no embarrassment allowed, just warm up
those vocal cords and belt out those songs. Her enthusiastic engagement with the
crowd encouraged even the shyest participants to join in, resulting in laughter,
applause, and impromptu dance sessions. The positive energy was infectious, with
guests singing, dancing, and forging new relationships throughout the evening.
Hosts Sukhan, the Newcomer Navigator from FCSS, and Ashley from Nekinan
Lodge, ensured the event ran smoothly. From welcoming guests at the door to providing
food and beverages, their efforts were evident in every detail. They mingled with
attendees, gathering feedback and encouraging connections, while Ashley even took
her turn and joined in the singing.
Attendees expressed appreciation for the karaoke night, with one remarking that
it the evening “brought back memories of community gatherings at the former
community centre when they were young, and how special it was to experience that
sense of community again.” Many requested more opportunities like this and organizers
hope that by sharing the experience of the cultural karaoke night, more residents will be
inspired to attend future events and help continue the tradition of togetherness in Smoky
