A smashing good time

By Brandie Majeau

Thorhild’s Annual Demolition Derby was a smashing success. The bleachers

were loaded as fans poured through the gates, eager to find the best view of the

upcoming chaos. The excitement built as the raffle was drawn, finally finding out who

would win the second portion of the Thorhild & District Agricultural Society Splash &

Crash fundraiser. Ian Paly, of the Thorhild area, won the demo car and chose to run it in

the upcoming demo and forgo the optional cash prize. In addition to the demo car raffle,

Thorhild Community Association held their raffle, offering visitors a chance to run a

combine in the combine demolition portion of the event. Grant Sr. Onge of Lac La Biche

won the raffle and incidentally ended up placing third in the event.

Fans were loud and excited as they cheered their favorite entries. The announcer

humorously engaged the crowd with updates and backstories for each vehicle and

driver. Engines roared, and tires flung mud as the vehicles raced across the ring to

achieve peak impact and damage. The excitement froze, held suspended, as a vehicle

burst into flames, and Thorhild Fire & Rescue raced to the aid of the driver. With the fire

suppressed and the driver safely removed from the scene, held breaths were exhaled,

and the evening continued.

The show was a whirlwind of entertainment, offering fans hours of delight. The

chants and gasps that rippled through the bleachers added to the excitement, building

up to the final crash, the final engine roar that brought the show to a thrilling end. The

winners, basking in their victory, received their well-deserved bragging rights and prizes,

a fitting conclusion to an evening of pure entertainment. Congratulations to all for a job

well done and the memories of this fantastic show that will keep spectators talking until

the next Thorhild Demolition Derby.
