The first Nova Fun Run, a 5km walk/run, was held on June 15, 2024, in the Town
of Redwater. The event was conceived during a discussion about the limited availability
of activities for women in the area. It was spearheaded by Chrisie Hrycun Norman, who
was motivated by a desire to create an enjoyable and purposeful event that would also
provide support to local businesses and the community. To bring the event to life,
Chrisie partnered with Dark Sky Nova, a local distillery, and collaborated with additional
sponsors to ensure its success.
When the participants joined the run, they not only had the opportunity to
engage their minds and bodies and support community initiatives, but they also had the
added excitement of being part of an 80s-themed event. The atmosphere was vibrant
as everyone dressed up in their best track suits and brightest neon’s, meticulously
styling and back combing their hair to achieve the ultimate eighties look. As they set out,
their brightly colored outfits turned heads and elicited cheers of encouragement
wherever they went. Lisa Nydegger clinched first place, earning the ultimate prize
package, while Allie Nikolai from Pasemko Farms good-naturedly finished last, pushing
a baby stroller and received her last place prize of garlic dip. The group concluded the
event with a hearty BBQ, skillfully served up by their very own eighties hair metal star,
Darren Norman.
The fun run attracted close to twenty participants and raised over $1000. The
Nova Fun Run selected Ochre Park School to be the recipients of this years proceeds
and the school has decided to use this donation to put towards their outdoor learning
space, a composter, gardening tools, and seeds. Chrisie Hrycun Norman offered a huge
thank you to Kristina Videck of Dark Sky Distillery for partnering with her to make this
event happen. A special thanks goes out to the following sponsors for being a part of
making the first Nova Fun Run such a success: Redwater IGA, Overtime Sports,
Redwater Home Hardware, Redwater Fitness Center, Tylor and Charissa Halonen,
Purechem (Troy Lyons), Cheryl Lynn Boyko Jewelry, Conifer Energy, Lisa and Bryan
Nydegger, Ty-Wire Electric, Stefen and Jessica Van Last, H2H Designs, Kathy Miller,
Annie and Ardy’s Gourmet Goodies and Krissy Makes Cupcakes.
The inaugural Nova Fun Run, which was themed around the vibrant and colorful
80s era, garnered tremendous success and positive feedback due to the enthusiastic
participation and generous contributions of all the participants, volunteers, and
sponsors. Owing to its triumphant debut, the organizers have announced that the event
will be returning next year, promising an even more exhilarating and enjoyable
experience for all those who join in.
