Mindfulness journaling: a tool for mental health

By Brandie Majeau

Sturgeon Adult Learning recently visited Redwater Public Library to distribute

mindfulness journals supporting Mental Health Awareness Week. Mindfulness journals

are highly regarded by many as an essential tool for those committed to enhancing their

overall mental well-being. Consistently journaling one’s experiences and articulating

thoughts, emotions, and significant events can profoundly impact mental health and

self-discovery. Mindfulness activities, such as journaling, assist individuals in becoming

more attuned to themselves and their surroundings. Devoting a tiny portion of each day

to the practice of expressing one’s thoughts can cultivate a valuable and beneficial

habit.

The heart of the issue lies in creatively conveying one’s thoughts in writing and

unburdening oneself of unwanted emotions, enabling a greater focus on life’s details. A

mindfulness journal is much more than just a pad and pen; the act of mindfulness

journaling can be as therapeutic as meditation.

What one chooses to write is as distinct as the individual themselves. There is no set

formula for using a mindfulness journal—it is entirely a personal experience. Whether

recounting the day’s events, delving into life’s challenges, exploring ideas, or simply

expressing emotions or thoughts, a mindfulness journal provides a safe space for

release and expression. From detailing a conflict to capturing a standout experience

from the day, the possibilities are as endless as the thoughts that flow through the mind.

Starting a mindfulness journal with positive affirmations and inspiring quotes can set the

tone for their practice. These messages can act as source of inspiration and help to

counteract negative thinking patterns. They can uplift and motivate individuals,

especially during times of struggle. Mindfulness journaling can also involve cultivating

positive habits, setting personal goals and challenges, and engaging in the creative

process to process and release emotional pain. Beginners can also incorporate meal

plans, music, and artwork into their journals to make the practice more holistic. Each

journaling journey is unique, serving as a private space for self-reflection and

expression. The blank pages of a mindfulness journal provide ample room for detailed

processing, self-care activities, or creative expression during moments of quiet

contemplation.

Anyone who missed the opportunity to pick up a mindfulness journal at Redwater Public

Library can purchase any notebook and begin their own mindfulness journey. A blank

piece of paper may seem intimidating, but as the words, quotes and doodles fill the

pages it becomes a powerful tool to declutter the mind.
