Pembina Place was full of laughter and music on June 6, as the Town of Redwater hosted a
celebration in honour of Seniors’ Week. Various community organizations and businesses were
invited to attend to celebrate the role that the senior population plays in our town and
surrounding area.
“Seniors’ Week events are organized to provide quality, affordable programming for our
community and to strengthen community bonds,” shared Liesel Spicer, Community Services
Coordinator. “It is one of our FCSS-funded programs (Family and Community Support
Services).”
The free event provided seniors with lunch and a celebratory cake, field games to play,
information booths with activities, and a chance to socialize and enjoy the company of friends
and neighbours. The Twilaters contributed to the festive atmosphere with a live performance on
stage.
“I absolutely love it,” said Avril Stachnik as she visited with a number of friends, and ensured
that everyone was well-fed.
Attendees were invited to fill out a survey at the event, and to provide suggestions for future and
upcoming events.
The history of Seniors’ Week in Alberta dates back to 1986 when Alice Modin campaigned to
start a Seniors’ Day in Strathcona County. Her vision led to the creation of a Seniors’ Week to
recognize the contributions seniors make to enhance the quality of life in Alberta.
