Sturgeon Design Co. was created in June this year when local to the Redwater area, hobbyist Christy Condin decided to bring her creations to the community. Since Condin was a young girl, she has always been crafty; the hobby began with sewing at the age of 12 and continued into adulthood. The day she received a new Cricut, her hobby blossomed, and she started making her husband and children home décor and more.
Condin said, “I have always been crafty; I got my Cricut a few years ago and started making signs, and this year I started making mugs and shirts. I do work mostly alone, besides my children painting alongside me. It’s stemmed as a family thing; my grandma, aunt and cousin are all super crafty. My mom will say that she isn’t, but she made every one of our Halloween costumes growing up!”
With her new Cricut in hand and endless crafting possibilities, Condin began her climb by marketing to family and friends; she continues to push products so more of the community can see her work. She also creates standard wooden signs and home décor, but mainly focuses on customizable shirts, hoodies, mugs, glasses, bags, and towels. Freshly starting in the home-based business world, Sturgeon Design Co. had a booth set up at last year’s Kris Kringle event in Redwater, focusing on sharing handmade ornaments and Christmas décor. Condin continues to boost Sturgeon Design Co. and is hosting her first pop-up shop in Redwater on December 3 at 4904 50 Avenue from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. She will have tons of homemade goods for customer purchase. Condin said, “I have never done a pop-up show before, but I am super excited for this one I have coming up!”
Condin said, “My little shop hasn’t been open for very long, since June. I was making all sorts of things for my kids, husband and family and really enjoyed it. I found it was making me a happier human, letting some creativity out and doing something for myself, so I started offering to make things for friends and family. That’s when I thought I could maybe make a little side gig out of something I truly enjoy. I hope to do more craft fairs and maybe some farmer’s markets next year!”
