Following suit with National Seniors Day, which was on October first, community services with the Town of Redwater have been busy keeping up with its local seniors. Offering resources to activities and volunteer opportunities to help keep the seniors connected to the community.
Recently five local seniors were the winners of a draw hosted by community services; the winners won many great prizes. Prizes included a house cleaning and gift cards for Subway, Home Hardware, Red Apple, and Shane’s Guardian Pharmacy. The draw ballots also had questions for seniors so that community services could connect better with many of them in their area. The questions help share information on activities and events they would like to participate in. Many suggestions have been put into place, like chair fitness classes.
Jennifer Edworthy, Community Services Supervisor, said, “Other suggestions we’ve received include programs and workshops related to pickleball, crafts, gardening, cooking, health, and finance. We might be able to squeeze in another suggestion or two before the year is done and are looking forward to implementing some of these suggestions next year.”
Community services have also put together a list of fun things to do or volunteer with. Seniors can walk or skate with family or friends at Pembina Place. Join the library’s adult programs or play some cards and darts at the Legion. The local pioneer club offers floor curling, or seniors can get artistic and try a class with the Art Society. If seniors have any knowledge to share, signing up for 4H mentoring could be just the fun thing to do, along with many other fun and exciting activities offered through community services and other community organizations.
Edworthy said, “Their contribution of knowledge, time, and participation results in increased quality of life in our community. In fact, their involvement played a large role in great attendance at the recent Seniors’ Conference on October sixth in Morinville hosted By Sturgeon County FCSS, which had topics on Mental Health, Green Sleeves, Dementia, Alberta Travel Destinations, information booths, entertainment, and breakfast and lunch!”
