The Blackbeary Eatery serves up a dish of thankfulness

By Brandie Majeau
Thanksgiving in Canada is celebrated on the second Monday in October and
serves as an important cultural event, allowing Canadians to express
gratitude for the harvest and the blessings of the past year. The holiday’s historical roots
can be traced back to European harvest festivals, emphasizing appreciation for the
bounty of the land and the support of the community.
One of the distinguishing features of Canadian Thanksgiving is its more subdued
and intimate nature compared to American Thanksgiving. While both holidays center
around gratitude and togetherness, Canadian Thanksgiving often leans towards quiet
reflection and family gatherings rather than large-scale commercial events. This may be
partly due to its timing, which coincides with the onset of autumn. This prompts families
to embrace the changing season and engage in outdoor activities, such as hiking or
scenic drives, to enjoy the ever-changing fall foliage.
This year marked the second annual free community Thanksgiving dinner at The
Blackbeary Eatery in Smoky Lake, a gathering that Gaila Alexander cherishes deeply.
The dinner, offered at no cost, brings joy to many, though generous donations towards
her nonprofit, the Warspite Community Flow Arts Association, are always welcome. The
team served a feast this year: turkey, ham, creamy mashed potatoes with gravy, fresh
broccoli and carrots, stuffing, cranberry sauce, warm buns, delightful pear crisp, and ice
cream. In the spirit of The Blackbeary Eatery, every dish was crafted from scratch and
served with care.
The dinner is a community dining experience where everyone sits together,
sharing stories, laughter, and camaraderie. It’s a time when guests are invited to wrap
themselves in the feeling of belonging and family. Why does Alexander invest her heart
into this? To her, The Blackbeary Eatery is not merely a restaurant; it’s a beacon of
community service. She holds fast to the belief that each of us can be the change we
wish to see in the world. Sometimes our journey feels like it takes us off course or
backward, yet we persist in moving forward with hope. Gaila Alexander wants this place

to go beyond a stop to eat; it is a place where people can gather, find nourishment,
embrace quiet moments and envelop one another in compassion.
In a true reflection of Thanksgiving, Alexander states, “Every day, I am thankful
for the blessings that I have from the creator. Does that mean that everything I do is

right? No, but the things that I do are motivated by love, kindness, and respect.” This
year held special significance for her, as her life and business partner of three years
chose to walk a different path. It’s been a challenging and transformative time, and she
strives to embody the resilience and grace that she often speaks of to others. She offers
advice to all that no matter how heavy the burden feels, it is important to allow the tears
to flow, but also to take that next step forward. There is a gentle reminder to let gratitude
fill the spaces of sorrow and embrace the larger tapestry of life.
The Blackbeary Eatery Thanksgiving dinner welcomed 30 wonderful souls this
year, each bringing a smile and warmth to the occasion. And with joy in her heart, Gaila
Alexander looks forward to coming together again for a special dinner on Christmas
Day.
Thanksgiving provides an opportunity for everyone to reflect on what they are
grateful for in their lives, prompting discussions about personal achievements, family
bonds, and the importance of community. This spirit of gratitude extends to volunteering
and charitable efforts, with many participating in food drives or community service,
families expressing thankfulness out loud or writing gratitude sentiments around their
tables.
In essence, Thanksgiving embodies a blend of gratitude, family unity, and cultural
appreciation, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere as the country celebrates the
harvest and transitions into the quieter months ahead. It’s a time for families and
neighbours to come together, deepening their roots in tradition while embracing the
richness and diversity of life.
