Santa comes early to Newthord Senior’s Housing

By Brandie Majeau
In an effort to spread warmth and joy during the holiday season, Fortis Alberta
has brightened the spirits of the residents at Newthorad Senior’s Housing with a
dazzling display of festive lights. This heartwarming initiative, which began in 2020,
involves dedicated employees who utilize their expertise as power line workers
equipped with bucket trucks to hang outdoor holiday lights at senior homes across their
service area.
As the tradition has evolved over the years, participants eagerly anticipate this
volunteer opportunity each season. Beyond just senior residences, Fortis Alberta’s
efforts extend to illuminating parks, community centers, hospitals, fire halls, and various
other public spaces. The inspiration for this generous project, aptly named Lights of Joy,
stemmed from a desire to enhance the lives of those in their community.
This holiday season, Thorhild Lodge was graced with the cheerful visit of two
Fortis elves, who arrived to deliver an impressive assortment of $1500 in donated lights
and decorations. With festive enthusiasm, they transformed the facility’s entrance into a
magical spectacle, radiating holiday spirit.
Recognizing that the holiday season can be challenging for many, Fortis Alberta
is dedicated to providing support to those in need. To further their mission of kindness,
they make contributions to local food banks and women’s shelters throughout the
province, ensuring that families and individuals in rural Alberta have access to essential
resources during this critical time.
Typically, lodge residents look forward to hopping onto the lodge’s bus and
embarking on a community tour to admire the enchanting light displays illuminating the
neighborhoods each holiday season. However, Lights of Joy offered residents the
chance to experience that same magic right at their doorstep. In a time when individuals
may feel isolated, lonely, or uncertain, a few sparkling strands of lights can make all the
difference. There’s truly something comforting about gazing out a window to see a
gentle flicker and a warm twinkle, filling hearts with hope and cheer.
