Millenia and the Edmonton Veselka Dancers put on an amazing show

By Brandie Majeau
The Radway Agricultural Society was once again excited to welcome Millenia to
the Agriplex. On November 2, Radway was filled with the magic of music and dance.
Millenia is a Canadian Ukrainian music group formed in 1999, focusing on preserving
and advancing Ukrainian music. Their albums, including “Коріння” (Roots), “Життя”
(Life), and “Браття” (Brotherhood), showcase their blend of traditional and modern
styles. The band, comprised of Bobby Yakoweshen, Johnny Wacko, Ryan Pugh, Shawn
Ostafie, and Clint Moroziuk, continues to perform and release music on various
streaming platforms, maintaining their mission to modernize traditional Ukrainian music.
This year’s show was further enriched by the vibrant and lively performance of
the Edmonton Veselka Dancers. The origins of this remarkable ensemble date back to
1983, when a passionate group of friends united with the shared goal of mastering
Ukrainian dance steps. After dedicating months to rigorous practice and exploration of
these traditional movements, the friends decided to take their enthusiasm to the next
level by establishing a Ukrainian dance club to celebrate and honor their rich cultural
heritage. Over the years, Veselka has blossomed into a dynamic ensemble comprised
of nearly fifty talented dancers, captivating audiences with their distinctive blend of
character, humor, and exuberant energy. The group’s performances are a vibrant
showcase of tradition and artistry, leaving a lasting impression on all who witness them.
The evening blossomed into an extraordinary culinary experience; a feast made
with care, each dish mixed and made with wisdom and heart, by skilled local cooks,
whose passion for their craft was evident in every plate. The cooking area of the
Radway Ag Centre was magically transformed into “baba’s kitchen”, reminiscent of
warm family gatherings and rich traditions, where the aroma of freshly prepared
Ukrainian dishes filled the air, beckoning guests to partake in a sensory celebration. As
attendees settled in, each bite was a revelation, transporting them through the diverse
flavors of Ukrainian cuisine, steeped in history.
Complementing this culinary journey, the evening pulsed with energy as
traditional dancers took to the floor. Their colorful costumes swirled in the soft glow of
the ambient lights, as each graceful step and spirited twirl told stories of generations
past, echoing the heartbeats of ancestors. The rhythmic footwork and animated
expressions not only captivated the audience but also unfolded vibrant narratives of
love, struggle, and cultural pride.
Laughter and applause filled the space, weaving together the joy of shared meals
and the thrill of dance, creating an atmosphere rich in connection and community. This

immersive experience was more than just an event; it was a heartfelt celebration of
Ukrainian heritage, celebrating the enduring spirit of a culture that cherishes its roots
while embracing the future.
