On a sunny August 17th, the air at the Smoky Lake Farmers Market was filled
with the sweet aroma of freshly baked goods and the sounds of excited chatter. It was a
day like no other as the market celebrated Open Farm Days in style, showcasing the
best of local talent and culinary delights. As visitors strolled through the bustling market,
they were greeted by the familiar faces of the regular merchants, each passionately
sharing their unique products and stories with the eager patrons.
Amidst the familiar, there were new and exciting attractions that captured the
attention of the crowd. One such attraction was the mesmerizing live beehive created by
Bear Lake Honey. The hive showcased the intricacies of bustling bees and provided
valuable information on the crucial role of pollination. But it was not just a display-
visitors were given the rare opportunity to gain experience about creating their own bee
house and were even challenged to spot the elusive queen bee among the bustling
activity. This interactive element was a key part of the day, making it not just a market,
but a learning experience.
Indoors, the atmosphere was abuzz with creativity as guests were treated to
captivating pottery and wool spinning demonstrations. Two friendly women skillfully
demonstrated the art of making perogies and cabbage rolls, inviting attendees to try
their hand at these time-honored traditions.
The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the free chef-prepared lunch buffet, a
true feast for the senses. Noel Simpson of Noel’s Catering displayed his culinary
prowess by crafting a mouthwatering spread using locally sourced products. From
savory sausages from Meatland Sausage to fresh produce from Hairy Hill Colony, every
dish was a testament to the incredible flavors that local ingredients can bring. The buffet
featured an exquisite array of salads, meats, and a compelling variety of roasted and
baked vegetables, each highlighting the rich flavors derived from the abundance of the
local harvest.
The Smoky Lake Farmers Market proved to be a delightful morning, a vibrant
celebration of local talent and a showcase of the bountiful offerings of the region. It was
a day filled with informative sessions, interactive experiences, and delectable opportunities that left a lasting impression on all who attended.
