Vilna Pool Hall holds cancer benefit BBQ

By Brandie Majeau

On May 18, 2024, the Friends of the Vilna Pool Hall and Barber Shop organized a

heartwarming cancer benefit BBQ to support Jordan Dagley, a beloved member of the

community. The simple BBQ served as a powerful testament to the community’s

unwavering values and dedication to rallying around those in need. Jordan, a cherished

local resident, is not only a son, husband, and father but also an inspiring young man

who sincerely appreciated the overwhelming support from everyone who attended this

remarkable event. Carol Trider, the Vice President of the Pool Hall and a founding

member, played a pivotal role alongside her partner Steve, engaging with and extending

warm hospitality to all the guests throughout the event.

Hundreds of people eagerly gathered outside; they didn’t let the grey skies, cool

Saturday temperatures, and occasional drizzle dampen their spirits as they waited to

savor delicious prime rib cheeseburgers in support of a good cause. Meanwhile, inside

the Hall, the atmosphere was vibrant and lively. Jordan and his family warmly welcomed

generous donors and enjoyed a few rounds of pool on the historic 100-year-old pool

and snooker tables. The incredibly talented Steve Hillis from Ashmont, Alberta, wowed

the large crowd with his impressive technical skills, captivating stage presence, and

boundless creativity.

Volunteers at the event were incredibly dedicated and hardworking. Linda Fenerty,

Deputy Reeve of Smoky Lake County and Pool Hall Treasurer ensured the BBQ

inventory and supplies were continuously replenished to meet the high demand. Dan

MacMullin, the Pool Hall President, and Kyle Coleman, the Pool Hall BBQ Master,

tirelessly cooked burgers on two grills for a total of 5 hours. Len Fedun diligently ran the

food from the BBQs to the condiment tables, ensuring everything ran smoothly. Janet

Abramic skillfully sliced and fried fresh onions without shedding a tear. Donna Orleski

efficiently managed the cash register and handled donations. Grant Hanson and Ron

Farmer oversaw the pool activities, and Hank Keller and his wife Linda, who served as

the pool hall secretary, joyfully served old-fashioned ice cream floats to kids of all ages.

Jordan and his family were elated and deeply thankful upon receiving the proceeds from

the event and were touched by the overwhelming love and support shown by the

community. The day was an absolute delight, and they were astounded by the number

of people who attended and supported the benefit BBQ and the dedicated volunteers

who made it all possible. The family extends their sincere appreciation to everyone for

their kindness, prayers, and generous contributions.

The Friends of the Vilna Pool Hall and Barbershop extend their deepest gratitude to the

donors, volunteers, pool hall members, Vilna General Store, and the many

organizations that advertised the event. Each one of them played a crucial

role in making this day possible, and they are truly grateful for all the support.
