Smoky Lake Long Term Care serves up handmade pet treats

By Brandie Majeau
Smoky Lake Long Term Care went pet-friendly to offer special treats to all the
local fur babies. Over twenty residents embarked on a handcrafted fundraiser this past
Valentine’s Day. With the discussion surrounding fundraising ideas and opportunities, a
co-worker from Radway Extended Care mentioned that they tried a dog and cat treat
campaign and it went really well. The idea was mentioned to the residents, and it was
very well received. The group loves pets and thought the project of getting their hands
dirty and baking individual treats for furry friends would be a wonderful and creative
endeavor.
The fundraiser was proposed to help with the costs of some higher-priced items.
With the residents enjoying entertainment and common group activities, Smoky Lake
Long Term Care was looking to purchase a new TV and stand using fundraising income
in addition to donations. The excitement built as the campaign was posted to the
community’s Facebook page and orders began to roll in. The Pet Biscuit Fundraiser
showed amazing support from the community as people reacted positively to the natural
ingredients and handcrafting of the treats.
With orders at the ready, residents rolled up their sleeves and enjoyed the simple
pleasure of measuring, mixing, and getting their hands mucked up for a communal goal
and the benefit of something special for an array of fuzzy companions. The delicious
items were packed with additional ingredients, tenderness, and compassion. On
February 14, Smoky Lake Long Term Care completed their orders and handed them off
with pride and accomplishment. After posting the fundraising event, one anonymous
Facebook friend generously donated a 55-inch television to the residents! After raising
approximately $135, the residents will purchase a portable stand to use with the
donated TV. It is with high hopes after this fundraiser that their long-term care facility will
have conveyed the resident’s true fondness of pets, perhaps resulting in some
preapproved pet visits in the future.
