A break from the cold: crafting arctic enchantments

By Brandie Majeau
Radway Public Library embraced the cold weather and dove in a wonderfully wintery
wonderland craft day. Little winter booted feet filled the foyer and a flurry of toques and
mittens littered the doorway, piling together as a multitude of children piled in to warm up
fingers and toes in anticipation of what was in store for the crafting afternoon. The table was
heaped with bits and pieces and the children were encouraged to jolt their imagination with an
activity of winter delight.
With careful guidance and encouragement to dive into their own imaginations to make
their creations come to life, bundles of cotton, pinecones and an array of materials unraveled
into delightful scenes and structures. The cardboard bases were transformed into snowy
landscapes and white fluff was wielded with the expertise of seasoned architects emerging into
igloos, snow forts and snowy scenic settings. Whimsical snowmen, in addition to woodland
creatures, were crafted and placed as charming characters to complete the fanciful
countryside.
The children displayed an enchanting talent to make such arctic dreamlands come to
life. It was a wonderful break from the cold and a chance laugh and giggle and delight in the
abilities and ingenuity of friends.
