In anticipation of the holiday feasts that so many are gearing up to enjoy, talks of
stretchy pants may be a consideration in addition to the menu. However, a group of avid
pickleball players are already donning sweats and leggings as they maintain fun and fitness at
Redwater’s Pembina Place for weekly pickleball matches.
This unique sport is played in an area similar to a badminton court and combines
elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. The ease of play and simplicity to learn creates
a great game for all levels of fitness and ability. Currently offered Mondays and Wednesdays,
the sessions generally attract at least a dozen players. Participants engage in high energy
motions but have the opportunity for frequent breaks or to swap out with other players. The
program provides all equipment except personal gym shoes and has attracted many players
from surrounding areas.
Due to the high demand and amazing response, pickleball at Pembina Place is
anticipating the new year with discussions on how to expand the program to reach a wider
range of players. The sessions will remain with purchases of passes or drop-in rates but is likely
to be offered for morning or evening sessions and on various days of the week allowing more
flexibility and accessibility for individuals wishing to participate but unable to fit or blend the
current pickleball schedule with their own.
“This is fantastic!” explained one player when discussing the amount of people that
come down for the challenge and enjoyment while another stated how great it is to play a
variety of people. Pickleball encourages anyone to drop in and learn as a new game or skilled
players to stop in and challenge a new opponent. Whatever the motivation, there is always
room for one more player on the court. Perhaps the upcoming thoughts of new years’
resolutions may place pickleball sessions on the list of becoming more active.
