Hamlet of Radway…Canada Post has advised Thorhild County that a dealer’s
application for Radway postal services has been approved. While few details are
available at this time, the County is pleased to share that post office services will remain
in the Hamlet of Radway at a new location.
Earlier this year, Thorhild County notified Canada Post of its intention to conclude its
dealership agreement as the operator of the Radway Post Office. This decision came
after many years of the County subsidizing the post office operations through property
tax dollars collected from all County property owners. Recognizing that postal services
are the federal government’s responsibility, Thorhild County began working with Canada
Post to transition postal services away from municipal operations.
“We knew that as long as the County picked up the costs for mail services, Canada
Post would maintain the status quo – that’s why it was important for us to trigger a
conclusion to the dealership agreement in January so that the service costs would be
applied where they belong, with Canada Post,” said Reeve Joyce Pierce. “Since we
announced that we were concluding the agreement, we have regularly communicated
with Canada Post to ensure they prioritized this matter.”
Canada Post is working to establish a timeline to open the new post office location, with
a tentative date of October 30, 2023. The transition will include relocating the post office
boxes from the current post office to the new location. If all goes as planned, this will
result in the current location potentially closing effective end of day Friday, October 27 th ,
and the move happening over the weekend.
The County will see an annual savings of over $65,000 resulting from the conclusion of
post office service provision.
“We appreciate the patience of Radway post office users as we worked with Canada
Post to ensure that services are maintained, and we are grateful that an applicant is
committed to managing local post office services in the Hamlet of Radway,” added
Reeve Pierce.
