Kids in the community were offered a chance to learn some new hockey skills from three local
and accomplished female athletes on August 8. The program, put on by the Town of Redwater,
was held at the fieldhouse at Pembina Place.
Jackie Vetsch, Lynn-Michele Angotti and Chloe Boyko represented the hockey heroines and
spoke to the attendees about their experiences, successes and challenges in the sport.
“My goal in putting this program together wasn’t to help current hockey players,” shared
Brandon Blok, Summer Program Coordinator with the Town of Redwater. “It was to hopefully get
a non-hockey kid to at least watch a game. If they were fired up enough to try the sport, then
that’s even better.”
Each of the three athletes had prepared a drill for the kids to take part in to learn some new
skills. After lunch, there were more fun activities and a chance to learn even more about hockey
from the three ladies who are passionate about the sport.
A total of 14 kids showed up to partake in the program, with an even mix of females and males.
“My motive for this event was very clear; girls are just not staying in sports after it becomes
more competitive,” explained Blok. “I find it very upsetting that girls are leaving sports more and
more.”
