Ice cream, athletics and board games

Thorhild & District Agricultural Society (TDAS) has been inviting the community to their
Ice Cream Socials since the middle of May.  Once a week, the Agriplex is open to guests who
would like to enjoy an ice cream cone (or float) and get in on some drop-in ball hockey.  Those
not inclined to play sports can choose from a wide variety of board games and strike up a
friendly competition.   
So far, there has only been ball hockey offered in the way of athletic options, but as the
summer continues, a pickleball set will be assembled, and plans for badminton, soccer and
basketball are in the works.   Concession Manager Roman Sopotyk said they are always looking
for more to offer the community.  They will always take donations, from board games to sports
equipment.  The Ag Society is in need of sports balls (soccer, basketball, volleyball, etc.), nets or
other equipment that can be used to create a social atmosphere that invites community
members to slow down and spend time together.  If children are grown and gone or have
simply outgrown something that may be tucked in the back of a shed, TDAS would love the
opportunity to give them new life at their functions.  Sopotyk mentioned that cash donations
are also welcome and will be used to purchase equipment or games as well. 
The ice cream cost is incredibly reasonable, and the portions are generous.  The
atmosphere is welcoming: voices mingle in calls of “hellos” and “how are you”, conversations
punctuated with laughter.   Roman Sopotyk not only serves up the cold treats but adds to the
friendly environment.  His smile beams at everyone who walks through the door.  It is this
attitude and feeling of belonging that will keep community members coming back week after
week.  The ice cream socials and ball hockey drop-ins have currently been held on Sundays but
may be changing to another day of the week.  Keep your eyes on the Thorhild & District

you haven’t had a chance to attend, it is worth the stop.  Take a summer break and maybe run
into an old friend or meet new ones.
