Final festival brings home multiple golds

The Thorhild Ukrainian Dancing Club concluded its 50th year in spectacular fashion.  

From May 12-14 the dancers attended their final festival of the season, the Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Festival in St. Albert. All of the groups- solo dancers, duets and trios came home with medals from the competition. 

It was the first time competing for the youngest group of the club, and they completed the festival with a gold in the Poltava. Group 2 won gold in both the Kozachok and the Hutsul. Group 3 received gold for their performances of the Poltava and the Polissian. Group 4 competed in three dances, winning gold in both the Zakarpattia and Polissian and bringing home silver in the Poltava. 

Solo dances were performed by both Lexi Nendze and Paley Hay, with both young ladies winning gold. Lexi also competed in a Poltava duet with her sister Kenley, taking home the gold. The trio of dancers performing the Polissian received gold for their performance. 

The club had a special anniversary and year-end celebration on April 29, which featured performances by all of the current club members, some past members, Volya Ukrainian dance Ensemble and Millenia. The importance of the Thorhild Ukrainian Dancing Club to the community was evident in the large number of attendees and sponsors of the event. 

“We’d like to thank all of those that donated to or sponsored our club’s 50th Anniversary and Year End Celebration,” shared Chelsea Anaka, a spokesperson for the club.
