Thorhild Central School (TCS) received a grant, the Alberta School Council Engagement
Grant, that “provides funding to school divisions for each active school council to support them
in fulfilling their legislated responsibilities in the education system and enhancing parent
involvement and engagement.” TCS used its funding and opened its doors to school families
and the community for a free family paint and craft night. This event promoted parent
engagement and the value of the arts.
Families could choose from one of four projects that were prepared and instructed by
H2H Designs. On the evenings of May 25 & 26, 43 families registered to attend this workshop
that was held in the foyer of the school. Grandparents, parents, and children all worked
together to make a mess of paint and color to create a project that was individually theirs.
With a splatter of paint falling on one table, a comment was made, “that’s how it’s supposed to
be.” The projects, though packaged as a set design, were not rigid and turned out perfectly as
each family gave them a personal touch. The groups encouraged each other in their designs
and processes to create a wonderful school and community-supported artistic endeavour.
