Newbrook Public Library celebrated Earth Day in a very hands-on way. A group of youth facilitators organized a special morning to celebrate the beginning of spring and the magic of new growth. The morning began with stories about signs of spring, trees and how a seed grows. The seventeen children that attended were then invited to get their hands dirty and make a mess as they explored seeds in various stages of growth, created bouquets of flowers out of pipe cleaners, painted rocks and planted “hair” in their self-decorated eggshell heads. The library was filled with laughter and plenty of smiles as they showed off their creations. When the youth facilitators were asked how the activity went, they commented that it was a “really good day”, but jokingly added that if they organize similar events, perhaps the last activity should be that all the kids have to clean up their own dirt.
