On April 18th, Irene Reitman was presented with the Melvin Jones Fellowship award in recognition of her amazing life of volunteer service. This is one of the highest forms of recognition that can be presented by the Lions Club. It recognizes the humanitarian qualities and all the ideas that represent the purpose and values of Lionism. Irene Reitman was honored to accept this award. She mentioned that this is the second one that has been given in their organization this year, which is something that rarely happens. Reitman acknowledged that the Melvin Jones Award is such an esteemed award that she jokingly said she feels like she now belongs to a select group of elites. However, in all seriousness, she explained that she is a huge advocate for volunteer services and feels that it is important for all people to donate their time, no matter how much or how little they are able to do. A community thrives when non-profit organizations have an abundance of helping hands.
Reitman continued to laugh and explain that she knew something was up but had no idea that this is what it would be. She also received a wonderful gift basket full of goodies. The award was presented in the presence of representation from the many organizations that Reitman has been a part of. Celebrating her achievement were the County Reeve and Deputy Reeve as well as members of Fotspa, Thorhild Library, Thorhild Museum, Thorhild Legion, and organizations that have been thankful for the countless hours she has dedicated her time to. As an added bonus her daughter had come out to take her to an appointment and Reitman had invited her to tag along to the meeting. Thankfully she accepted, by pure coincidence her daughter was present to witness this amazing achievement. This is the highest award a Lion can receive through Lions International. The award was also accompanied by a Melvin Jones Fellowship pin that Reitman can proudly wear as a daily reminder of her accomplishment.
