Did you know that February 1st marks the beginning of Heart Month? The Minister of Health released a statement declaring that “heart disease is currently one of the leading causes of death in Canada, second only to cancer.” He goes on to say that while there are many advances in drug therapies and prevention efforts that simple lifestyle changes can reduce your risks. You can read the full message on the Government of Canada website.
So, let’s change it up and get that heart healthy. With warm weather in our February forecast take advantage of the sunshine, let it activate a boost of serotonin and flood your body with beneficial hormones and vitamins and then get moving. When we move and exercise it works like any other muscle, getting stronger and more efficient the more we use it.
Check with the local arenas about times for drop-in activities that require no commitment. Thorhild Arena offers public skating and open age shinny. Pembina Place also offers public skating and drop-in shinny as well as drop-in pickle ball. They also have an outdoor rink for public use. If you are feeling more adventurous Long Lake Ski Area is also open for your enjoyment. They have certified instructors ready to book for lessons if you need a little bit of support to get you going. There is also a toboggan hill as well as trails for walking and snowshoeing that are available for your use.
However, if you are looking to keep your costs down in our current economy, remember that being active does not have to cost you a thing. Visit Redwater Provincial Recreation Area or one of four natural areas located in Thorhild County. They offer an endless number of free activities. Whatever your skill level or interests are there is something to do. Enjoy the trails and hike according to your ability and enjoyment. Take a walk and give yourself time to notice the birds or study the trees and landscapes, challenge yourself by searching for hidden geocaches, try your hand at nature journaling or photography.
Whether you maintain an active lifestyle or just need a boost to get you started, your community is filled with opportunities to get you going. The winter months can feel long and isolating, but it just takes one step to begin your adventure. Do your heart a favor and explore what your backyard has to offer.
